Originating from the Tabaka Hills of Kenya, this artistic piece features Joseph and Mary cradling baby Jesus. This unpolished stone sculpture seeks to capture the raw beauty and authenticity of natural materials. By leaving the stone in its rough, unfinished state, the imperfections and unique textures inherent to each piece are on display. The natural contours and subtle variations in the stone become integral to the work, emphasizing the connection between the earth and the artistic process. Each mark left by hand is a testament to the patient and meditative journey of sculpting, where the stone guides the artist as much as the artist shapes the stone.
Each element of this nativity scene is meticulously carved and set upon a gracefully curved plaque, showcasing the intricate artistry and deep cultural heritage of the Kisii region. The soapstone’s natural palette—ranging from serene white to gentle pink and sophisticated grey—creates a harmonious and elegant display.
The stone undergoes several stages of sanding and waxing, resulting in a smooth, satiny finish that highlights the detailed craftsmanship. This nativity scene is not only a stunning addition to any collection but also a meaningful gift, ideal for collectors, newlyweds, or anyone who appreciates finely crafted, ethical art.
Great gift for the nativity collector or wedding gift.
Measures Approximately: 6.5 inches tall.
Because a variety of communities carve the statue, expect designs variations and color variation in the natural stone.
Story Behind the Art:
Each sculpture is artfully hand-carved from a single piece of Kisii soapstone, found only in the hills of southwestern Kenya. Mining the soapstone from surface hills is a labor-intensive process, using little to no machinery. Laborers work with shovels, picks, axes and machetes to carve out large soapstone chucks. The large pieces of stone are cut using pangas (large knives) and then brought to the workshop for carving and finishing. Each etching is intricately carved by hand.
